LCD and Plasma Displays Basics

When businesses want a vibrant display for tradeshows, lobby signs, kiosks, or retail locations, a flat screen monitor provides clear, crisp picture quality and takes up far less space.

Both technologies are similar in that they are thin form and feature millions of colors. However, there are several cases you could make for one technology over the other. Plasma displays are available in much larger sizes than LCD displays, but for smaller applications, LCD's smaller versions work best. Plasma also creates a "burn in" affect that will show the background of an after it's no longer on screen; LCD displays don't have this problem. You also have to factor in viewing angles, color differences, contrast, and lifespan before making a purchasing decision.

If you are ready to buy either display, look out for "too good to be true" bargains. This usually includes customer returns, displays with missing accessories, or floor models that may not have the same quality or manufacturer warranty as brand new or manufacturer-refurbished displays.

Points to consider:

  • Do you have a preference for an LCD or a Plasma display?
  • How will you be using your flat panel (signage, conference room, trade shows, lobby or other public area, home theater, bar or night club, etc)?
  • What other devices will you connect to your display (DVD, VCR, computer, video teleconferencing, etc)?
  • Are you seeking a high definition flat panel?
  • What accessories, if any, would like to be included with your display (wall mounts, speakers, travel case, etc.)?
