Home Alarm System Basics

A monitored home alarm system can provide you with peace of mind. With an array of devices to detect intruder motion, note changes in room temperature, and notify neighbors and passers-by, home security systems provide all the tools you need to protect your home and loved ones.

You have two options for your home alarm: hard-wired or wireless. If you have existing wiring from a previous system, it's an easy install. Otherwise, a wireless system gives you the same benefits without having to drill holes or lift carpets.

Most basic monitored home alarm system will include the control panel, security keypads, motion detectors, door and window contacts, glassbreak sensors, and sirens. You could also tack on additional options to your system such as pet motion sensors, fire alarms, and video surveillance.

While these alarm components detect intrusion, the central monitoring station is the force that actually protects your home and family. If your alarm is tripped, the control panel alerts the monitoring station and authorities are dispatched to the scene. The alarm vendor you work with should provide both the equipment and monitoring service.

Points to consider:

  • Are you interested in a hard-wired or wireless system?
  • Do you require a local monitoring service?
  • Are you interested in a motion detector in addition to door/window sensors?
  • Would you like to add a keypad or wireless "key fob" to enable/disable the system?
  • How many doors/entryways do you have in your home?
  • How many first floor windows do you have in your home?
  • Do you own any pets?
