Color Printers Basics
A color printer is no longer the luxury it used to be. For many businesses, it's a huge cost saver, since color documents can be produced in-house, without a trip to the copy shop. Prices have fallen dramatically, so color laser printers are affordable for many small offices.
The biggest drawback facing color printers is their higher cost per page, but that's easily offset by the advantages of in-house color. There are several competing technologies, including laser, inkjet, and thermal wax printers. Make sure you get the right one for your needs by working with a qualified supplier.
When you are ready to budget for a specific machine, it’s important to factor in the cost of consumables such as ink cartridges as those can require replacement frequently (depending on the size of your printer and how heavily it is used) and the cost will add up quickly. The price per page of a machine is a good way to assess this (cost of the machine plus estimated cost of consumables divided by the total estimated pages per month) and you may be surprised at the variance between color printer models.
A color printer suitable for an office setting will cost at least $750 but, unless it is used infrequently or by a very small number of staff members, a heavier-duty model may end up saving you money in the long run (due to consumables and potential repairs/replacement bills).
